Installing Windows 10 in UEFI mode provides several advantages: use of GPT partition table for hard drives of more than 2TB, have more than 4 primary partitions ... besides being able to enable fast boot among other things, therefore, if your board is of those that allow you to install it in UEFI or BIOS mode, the ideal is to install it in UEFI mode, unless for reasons of compatibility with any other system you are interested in installing it in BIOS mode.
As you can see the process is quite simple and fast. The Rufus tool allows us to record bootable images of any other operating system so it will surely be useful in the future
Requirements that you must know
- Windows 10 can be installed in BIOS mode or in UEFI mode, depending on the motherboard, on older boards without UEFI it can only be installed in BIOS mode. Therefore, the first requirement is to have a modern plate compatible with UEFI. In general, they are retrocompatible and can be installed in both modes (BIOS or UEFI).
- A valid Windows 10 64-bit image. The Windows 32-bit ISO is not compatible with UEFI mode (In UEFI we can only install 64-bit systems).
- Finally you will need Rufus, a utility designed to create a bootable USB for systems using MBR or GPT partitions.
Install Windows 10 in UEFI mode with Rufus:
- Download the latest version of Rufus
- Once you have Rufus open, the first thing you have to do is choose the USB drive you want to use to copy the Windows 10 installation files from the Device box. (Remember to backup the content of the pendrive, since all the data of the pendrive will be erased).
- Then select the GPT partition scheme for UEFI
- The boxes "File system" and "Cluster size" should be left in the default configuration (FAT32 / 4096 Bytes)
- Remember to enter a label for the device.
- Now let's choose the Windows image. To do this, check the box "Create boot disk with .." and select the option "ISO image" from the drop-down menu.
- Then click on the disk icon to open the Windows 10 ISO file that you want to burn to the USB drive, select it and click on Start. Rufus will proceed to record the ISO on the pendrive (it may take a few minutes).
- Once the recording process is finished, restart the PC and enter the BIOS configuration, or to the boot menu, pressing Esc, F2, F9, F12, etc.
- In the order of boot devices, select as the first option the USB drive containing the Windows image and make sure that the selected flash drive is cataloged with the "UEFI Mode" label. (You may see different commands for the same device, for example, you could see UEFI USB Drive and USB BIOS Drive, each command uses the same device and hardware, but boots the computer in a different firmware mode).
- Save the changes and restart the PC. The installation of Windows will start automatically.
